Old house, new bath

Keep what is good. Fix what is not.

Many houses on the south side of Fort Worth were built in the 1910s and 1920s with one small bathroom. The tile is handsome and the walls are plaster. The shower is the problem, and so are the pipes behind it. We rebuild that room so it keeps its character and finally works.

That means hex and subway tile laid the way they were meant to be, trim and doorways that match the house, and a clawfoot tub where the floor plan allows. Behind the walls, everything is new. Plumbing, wiring, a fan that moves air, and a shower with real space and a clean glass front.

We have done this work around Fairmount, Berkeley Place and Tanglewood since 2017. Kitchens and whole houses too, with the same patient hands.

See how it goes

What we build

Baths first. Then the rest of the house.

Three big jobs lead the shop. Each gets the same patient crew and the same written scope.

Bathroom Remodeling

Our main work. We take a small original bath down to the framing, square the walls, replace the old supply and drain lines and rebuild it. A walk-in shower with a low threshold, period-minded tile in hex or subway, a pedestal or furniture-style vanity, warm light at the mirror. A clawfoot tub if the room is wide enough. The bath still belongs to the house, and now it is comfortable.

Kitchen Remodeling

Older kitchens are often small, closed off and cut up by walls that carry nothing. We open them where the house allows, run new electrical and plumbing, and set full cabinetry, solid counters and good light. The result is a kitchen that fits a 1920s bungalow or a 1950s ranch and works for the way you cook today.

Whole-Home Remodeling

When the bath and kitchen are only the start. We rework a whole older house in one planned run. Floors are repaired or replaced, walls opened, wiring and plumbing brought up to date, and rooms joined so the plan makes sense. The woodwork, windows and proportions that make the house special stay in the picture. One crew, one schedule.

How a job runs

Three steps, taken slowly.

Old houses reward patience. This is the order we work in.

  1. Visit and listen

Call the shop. We come out, look at the room, check what the floor and walls are doing and hear what you want to keep. You get an honest read on what the house allows.

  2. Plan and price in writing

We draw the layout and choose tile, fixtures and finishes with you. You receive a written scope with the price by line. Nothing is ordered until you agree.

  3. Build and hand back

Demo, plumbing, wiring, waterproofing, tile and trim, in order, with a clean site each evening. We walk the finished room with you and fix anything that is not right.

Why Pearl

What you can count on.

Character stays

Original tile patterns, window trim, door heights and the scale of the room are worth keeping. We reuse or match them wherever we can, so the new bath reads as part of the house.

Built behind the wall

Old galvanized lines, cast-iron drains and soft subfloors are common in these houses. We find them early and replace them, so what you cannot see is as good as what you can.

Calm on site

A small crew, a tidy house and plain talk about what we find. If a wall holds a surprise, you hear it from us that day, with options.

Finished rooms

Rooms that still belong to the house.

Can you keep my original tile?

Sometimes. Hex and subway tile in good shape can often be lifted and reused, but old tile is brittle and the walls behind it rarely are sound. When it cannot be saved, we match the size, color and pattern closely. We tell you which it will be after we see the room.

Will a modern shower fit in my small bathroom?

Usually, yes. Many older baths have a tub along one wall that can become a walk-in shower with a low threshold and a glass panel. We measure first and show you the layout before anything is ordered.

Can I have a clawfoot tub?

If the floor can carry it and the room is wide enough to walk around it, yes. Cast-iron tubs are heavy, so we check the framing under the floor. Where it will not fit, a deep soaking tub in a similar shape is a good option.

What do you find behind the walls of a 1920s house?

Often old galvanized or lead-era supply lines, cast-iron drains, plaster over lath, and wiring that has been added to over decades. We replace what is worn out and tell you what we found as we go.

How long will my bathroom be out of use?

A full bathroom usually takes several weeks on site, depending on the plumbing and the tile. If it is your only bath, we talk through a plan up front so you are not caught without one longer than you must be.

Do you work on 1950s and 60s ranches too?

Yes. Tanglewood and Westcliff are full of well-built ranches with small baths, pink or yellow tile and tired plumbing. We update them with larger showers, better light and clean modern finishes.
